Essential, fragrance and cosmetic oils: what is the difference?

A plain-language guide for brands buying oils for aromatherapy, skincare and home fragrance.

The three oil families are often confused, yet they serve different purposes and are regulated differently.

Essential oils are aromatic compounds extracted from plants, typically by steam distillation or cold pressing. They are used in aromatherapy and natural personal-care products.

Fragrance oils are blended aromas designed for scent performance in candles, diffusers, soaps and perfumes.

Cosmetic or carrier oils are plant oils used as the base of skincare and haircare formulations.

Tell us the application and the regulations of your target market, and we will match the right oil to your formulation.
